The observatory del Teide is located on the brink of the Cañadas amounting to 2400 meters, more exactly in Izaña, 6 kilometers away from "El Portillo", on the road towards La Laguna. Operator is the "Instituto Astrofisica Canarias" [IAC] in La Laguna.
However here are also three German Solar Telescopes, which are supported by different German institutions and Ministries.

This location is outstanding suitable for astronomical observations, because below the mountain top a steady inversion layer is formed, which restricts the ground level damp air layer, dominated by the north-east trade wind. The atmosphere above it is usually very clear and cloudless. In the crest regions the air, which the west wind brings from the sea, is stably layered and the best guaranty for a sharp and still picture.
