Tenerife has two main airports, one is the older Northern airport Aeropuerto Tenerife Norte near La Laguna and second the southern airport Aeropuerto de Tenerife Sur Reina Sofia which was opened 1978.

The southern airport was built as main airport of the island for the increasing number of tourist flights because the older airport near La Laguna is often covered with trade wind clouds.
