The second largest city of Tenerife, after Santa Cruz
- (San Cristobal de) La Laguna, has an ancient Old Town centre, which was formed
by the eventful history of the city.
Wonderful buildings of colonial style and churches representing the splendid
past of the first spanish colonial town of the island, as being university
town since the 18th century it became the bishop's see of the canaries in 1818.
Although it had to give off the capital status at Santa Cruz in 1723, the city
remained the cultural and religious center of the island. 1999 the ancient town
center was declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
