Güimar, convenient to the south eastern coast, ranks among the oldest
municipalities Tenerifes and has to offer - beside the two churches from the 17th
century the Iglesia del Convento de Santo Domingo and Iglesia de San Pedro
- other traditional buildings too. At the beginning of September
here takes also place the oldest Romerias of the island, the Romeria de El
Socorro, when the statue of the virgin will be brought to the beach by the faithful people of San Pedro.
The touristic main attraction are however the
Piramides de Güimar, which
were “discovered” in 1991 and laid open by Thor Heyerdahl. Until
then the largely visible complex was deemed to be only a peck of
old stones. But Heyerdahl has found here well-defined step pyramids, whose largest complex
is astronomically concentrated to the sunset at summer solstice.
